Desirable Leadership styles
Desirable leadership styles
( From a sincere teammate )
1. Be a Visionary, but more important, be a good listener.
2. Respect Protocol, but keep your doors open for anyone to enter, so that you get ground realities beyond the 'filtered news' reaching via protocol.
3. Identify the 'Yes Sir/Boss' people around you. Probe them once a while, with intriguing questions on business happening in the field. Helps them to get fine tuned, makes them understand what the boss wants and gives them a chance to be the real bridge between boss and others.
4. Compliment the staff in front of others. Reprimand them in person
5. No leader is an expert in all areas, the bank undertakes. Understand where you are a 'jack"and where, an expert. Lead from the front in areas you feel you are an expert. Aĺlow the experts in the team to lead, where you are a 'jack' and back them fully.
6. Never be of 'Nuisance' value when the team is executing well and the least thing it expects is 'interference' from the top
7. Organise 'Conferences/Seminars/Conclaves' in resorts, toutrist spots and temple towns. Helps rejuvenation of the teams working under you. But do remember the purpose is enhancing business and let not 'enjoy/entertainment' supercede.
8. Do visit branches/admin offices located in places of pligrimage or historic importance. Ensure your visit gives a face lift to the branch/admin office to do more business and let your personal visit be incidental/outside office hours or by taking a day off after the business engagements are over.
9. Be happy, if out of 10 decisions taken by you or team members, 7/8 decisions are right.
10. When a team member executes in full measure, but the result is not successful, be the first one to console and encourage him (I saw this when ISRO Chief Mr. Sivan was given a pat by the PM, when the launch failed to take off)
11. Let achievements be shared as team effort and take full responsibility for failures.
12. Remember that your mettle counts more, when you handle and retrieve the organisation from stress situations than being the 'face' in times of achievements.
13. Promote both achievers of business and drivers of controls. The former takes the bank to the top and the latter ensures it does not go down.
14. You are selected to a position to ensure continuity in areas of strengths and bring in changes in areas of weaknesses. Do it professionally without wasting time on blaming predecessors.
15. Encourage and listen to different/dissenting views when a new idea/ project is conceived. But ensure all team members wholeheartedly join the execution as 'one team', when the idea/project is implemented.
16. Be always open to course corrections to achieve the objective. You need not be aplogetic, but explain the necessity and revised plans to team members.
17. Be a good human being. Remember the respect is for the 'seat" you occupy and the next person gets the same respect when you vacate. The 'smile' in others' faces when you meet them after you vacate reveals the 'personal touch' you exhibited in your stay at the top.
Thanks for listening.
Best Wishes
