An open letter

An open letter to DFS or RBI or to whom? Perceived, yet undefined, "conduct and behaviour" determine or detrimental to selection?:   It has been reported in the newspapers that Financial Services Institution Bureau (FSIB) is conducting interviews for the positions of MD & CEO in four public sector banks (PSBs), including that of Indian Bank (IB), where the present MD & CEO is retiring on 31st December 2024. Conduct of interviews for the position of MD & CEO of IB raised a few eyebrows in the banking circle, as the name of the ED of Bank of Maharashtra (BoM) was shortlisted by the FSIB for the said position in April 2024. The news item further reported that the decision of FSIB could not be completed to its logical conclusion, since Reserve Bank of India (RBI) appear to have taken a stance (in its communication to FSIB) that the "behaviour and conduct" of the said official "was not befitting his position and responsibilities concerning regulatory c...

IBC resolutions and haircuts

Image
What should be the yardstick to evaluate haircuts in IBC  Recovery versus Total Admitted claims - a fallacy: Recently, one of the largest bank employees' union in India, came out with a list of business firms, said to have been acquired by a business conglomerate through resolutions/liquidation effected under IBC (Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code), with a statement that the business group is the beneficiary at the cost of the banks concerned (average haircut 74%). While the fight against huge haircuts in the banking books (in the resolution process under IBC) by the bank employees' union is understandable, I did not subscribe to the view that was being impressed upon  (in their circular)  that the process was done in order to help one particular beneficiary. Right from the beginning, the resolutions  done through IBC witnessed haircuts ranging from 40 to 80% and the said list, at best, is only  an affirmation to the general trend since the beginning of the...

If I were inducted as a member in MPC

If I were a new MPC member, I will vote for status quo The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) of Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is meeting in Mumbai today to review the policy (repo) rate and the monetary policy stance for the next two months. Since the last review of MPC on 8th August 2024, the following developments  are noteworthy.  Domestic:   (i) The Central Government has appointed   Dr.  Ram Singh, Shri Saugata Bhattacharya and Dr. Nagesh Kumar as the  new members to the MPC in place of the three members, who completed their terms recently*. It will be the first interaction for the above members with the other three members of the MPC and it will be of interest, how they vote in the decision of the committee on repo rate and monetary stance. (ii) CPI inflation rate at 3.6% in July 24  and 3.7% in August 24 were below the target repo rate of 4%.  (iii) GDP growth was at 6.7% in the April-June quarter, due to decline in the government e...

How to increase the pace of growth in bank deposits

Improving deposit growth in banks: A few suggestions While scheduled commercial banks (SCBs) have grown their loan books impressively during the post COVID period (since April 2021), their growth in deposits did not match the growth under loans during the same period.  In fact, only in 2023-24, the deposit growth of SCBs crossed two digits (lower single digits in the previous two years) as compared to the aggressive growth of 15-20% in the loan books in the last three years. As (i) 22.5% of any deposit sourced needs deployment in cash with RBI and eligible SLR securities and (ii) loan growth outpaced deposit growth by a considerable margin, apart from CD ratio reaching almost beyond manageable limits, a situation has come where the banks have to either borrow in the market (including medium term notes) or rely on the costly short term certificates of deposits, popularly known as bulk deposits. In this regard, the GDP growth is healthy indicating that the demand for loans...

T. SBT Foundation Day - Sadhabishegam begins

SBT Foundation Day Sadhabishega Prarambam 79 years have passed by, since Travancore Bank Limited (TBL) came into formal existence by way of registration as a bank on 12th September 1945. (Now celebrated by all of us as SBT Foundation Day).  As the 80th year of the foundation day begin, I share a few thoughts on what defined SBTians during the SBT period till March 2017.  Commitment to excellence, emphathising  with customers, rising like a phoenix, mutual respect and affection towards each other*, which was never explicitly expressed but remained an invisible thread that united all SBTians.  All Managing Directors, who understood our traits perfectly, especially in respecting our values and self respect, reaped rich dividends and accolades from the bank's performance during their period. I distinctly remember Shri P.N. Venkatachalam, who was our MD post 2000. (He retired as MD of SBI after leaving us). He soothened our hurt feelings, reversed the bad HR decisi...
